FusionCorps Challenged to new heights!
I had the pleasure of spending the day with FusionCorps on Wednesday August 26, 2009 when Fusion hosted 30 Job Corps participants at Camp Jordan for a day of teambuilding and challenges. We arrived at 8:00 am ready to learn about each other (and ourselves). Jim Bentley and his team from the Bangor Y made the group at home with our first teambuilding activity of jump rope. Imagine trying to jump rope with 30 other people. It was quite the experience!
We went on to play several other teambuilding games including; Retail Detail, Whale Watch and Line Up. By the end of the day I felt like we were part of the Job Corps group. As the official photographer for the day, the most fun part about the day for me was seeing these students push themselves and do things they never thought they would do.
It was amazing to watch these Job Corps participants, some from very difficult backgrounds, realize that they CAN succeed at a task even if it appears too difficult. Even when they were not totally successful at a task (like the tire swing element) you could see the satisfaction in their eyes and demeanor for having tried something they never saw themselves doing.
FusionCorps is a great program providing Job Corps the opportunity to learn and grow outside of their classroom. Over and over I heard these individuals talking about how the networking and the teambuilding experiences they have received through the program has made them feel more confident. I look forward to future FusionCorps events like the "Make a Difference Day" partnership in October and the resume/networking workshop in November. If you have not attended a FusionCorps event you are missing out. I hope to see you at the next!
